The Lower Dolpo Trek is one of the most unique trails in Nepal and is completely different from the more well-known treks. If you are looking to get off the beaten path and see awe-inspiring well-preserved culture and pristine landscape, the Lower Dolpo Trek is a perfect choice. There have even been films made and books written about this magical place (i.e. Himalaya (Caravan) by Eric Valli and Th
e Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen). The area has not only caught the attention of Westerners, though. Tibetan Buddhists have named the land “bae-yul,” meaning ‘hidden land.’ The Lower Dolpo Trek is an epic journey into the country’s largest, but least populated and most remote district. Until today, most parts of the Dolpo district are inaccessible by road. Because of this, the area is kept in its natural form and has escaped the grasp of development. Most of the roughly 35,000 residents of Dolpo live off the land and some rely on trade with Tibet for their livelihood. Locals practice Bon Po, an ancient shamanastic religion with parallels of Tibetan Buddhism. You will become deeply fascinated by this unique religious, full of myths and rituals. The adventure starts after a series of flights from Kathmandu. Fly to Nepalgunj, a scorching city on the border of India, and then to Juphal. From there, we drive to Dunai and begin the several-weeklong trek. Spend memorable days walking past meadows, forests, rivers, and quaint settlements. Get into the rhythm of life on the trail and become more in tune with mother nature’s clock. Before you know it, arrive to Shey Phoksundo Lake (3620 meters) – a major highlight of the trek. The electric blue-green waters are stunning, not to mention the lake creeps up to staggering rocky walls. You will never forget the moments you spend at Shey Phoksundo Lake. Also, spend some time exploring the nearby village of Ringmo. After two nights at the breath-taking lake, we finish the final stretch the trek to Juphal. Book the incredible Lower Dolpo Trek with us today! The Lower Dolpo Trek lies in a restricted area (meaning you must pay a $500 fee for 10 days and $50 per day after). We understand that this is a major downfall, but if you can manage that, we guarantee the adventure of a lifetime for you. You will not regret it, that is a promise! Remember, you only live once. Join the Lower Dolpo Trek anytime during the year. The Dolpo treks are the few that are not only suitable, but even better in the summer (rainy) season. In general, the skies are clearer and the landscape is more beautiful. Crystal Himalaya Treks & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. manages the package with complete care. The views are the best and there is less of a chance for clouds/snowfall. After about 3 hours, we reach the pass. On a clear day, we can see Dhaulagiri (8167 meters) looming high in the distance. However, some parts are a bit dangerous and prone to landslides so we use caution. Otherwise, there is a Bon Po Monastery at the other side of the lake that we can visit.
